Deadly airstrike hits market in Rakhine State
At least 50 people were reportedly killed and 58 injured when Myanmar military airstrikes struck a busy market in Kyauktaw township, Rakhine State. The market served Rakhine, Rohingya, Hindu, Daingnet and other communities, and the death toll could rise.
UN Human Rights Chief Volker Türk said the attack raised serious questions about compliance with international humanitarian law, including the requirements to distinguish between civilians and military targets, limit harm and take precautions.
The strike also threatens food supplies in a region already affected by trade restrictions and limited humanitarian access.
Malaysia’s repatriation draws mounting protection concerns
Malaysia has returned 1,476 Myanmar nationals, including Rohingya refugees, despite warnings from the UN and humanitarian groups that Myanmar remains unsafe.
Malaysian authorities described the process as voluntary, but UNHCR said it could not determine whether people held in immigration detention had made free and informed decisions.
UNHCR urged Malaysia to conduct individual protection assessments outside detention and warned against returns that could expose people to persecution, torture, forced recruitment or other serious harm.
The operation has made the safety of returnees—and the safeguards applied after arrival—a central regional accountability issue.
Report details destruction of Rohingya villages under Arakan Army control
An investigation reports that Rohingya villages in northern Rakhine have been demolished, seized or repurposed since the Arakan Army captured much of the area in 2024.
An internal UN report identified at least 800 hectares across 23 villages being used for camps, new settlements or military infrastructure; survivors also described killings, forced relocation, land confiscation and forced labour.
Although fighting has eased in parts of Rakhine, displacement continues. More than 155,000 Rohingya have reportedly arrived in Bangladesh since 2024, adding to an estimated 1.2 million refugees there. The loss of homes and farmland could make any future return more difficult, even where front lines have quieted.
