Medtronic launches real-time OR AI; first app FDA-cleared

Medtronic introduced Touch Surgery Aide, a real-time OR AI platform built on NVIDIA’s Holoscan/CUDA/TensorRT, and secured FDA clearance for its first app, Instrument Exit Point, on the Hugo robotic system.
Touting simultaneous multi-app capability and a path from robotics into laparoscopy, it extends an ecosystem already in 1,500 ORs and will debut at the Society of Robotic Surgery meeting July 23–26.

1. Medtronic unveils real-time OR AI platform; FDA clears first app

Medtronic unveiled Touch Surgery Aide, an AI-native computing platform for the operating room that enables real-time decision support during procedures.
Built on NVIDIA’s Holoscan, CUDA, and TensorRT, the system will be showcased at the Society of Robotic Surgery meeting in Florida on July 23–26.
It extends the Touch Surgery ecosystem—already in more than 1,500 operating rooms—by processing surgical video and context in real time and running multiple AI applications simultaneously.
The first application on the platform, Instrument Exit Point (IEP), received FDA clearance for use with Medtronic’s Hugo robotic-assisted surgery system.
IEP provides a visual alert when select instruments move beyond the visible field during a robotic procedure, and the platform is designed to expand into laparoscopic surgery over time.
Medtronic also noted Hugo’s December 2025 FDA clearance for urologic procedures and June 2026 510(k) submissions to extend U.S. use to general and gynecologic specialties.
